How a Jaipur block print is made

Every piece in this shop goes through these four steps, by hand, in Sanganer and Bagru near Jaipur.

A sheesham block, cut by hand. One block per colour, one mistake and it starts again.

Madder root, indigo, pomegranate rind, iron — colour out of the ground, not a drum.

Block, press, lift. Across a whole length of cloth, by eye, one impression at a time.

Washed in the Sanganer river bed and laid out in the sun, which is what sets the colour.
